Bite Size Comms

An A to Z of public relations

β€’ Alan Anstead β€’ Episode 33

We give each letter of the alphabet a public relations angle. With a little humour too!

An A to Z of Public Relations

πŸ“– A is for Attention. Hard to get nowadays. Even harder to keep. Don’t scroll away so soon!

πŸ“– B is for Broadsheet. A term for more serious newspapers, but are any printed in that large size anymore?

πŸ“– C is for Channel. Not the prime consideration in planning content. Purpose, audience, then channel.

πŸ“– D is for Disinformation, the new term for propaganda.

πŸ“– E is for Engagement rate, the prized analytic in social media.

πŸ“– F is for Framework. As in the AMEC Integrated Framework, the best tool for measuring and evaluating campaigns.

πŸ“– G is Generative AI. The future of PR. Maybe.

πŸ“– H is Hallucination. Such a pleasant term for lies. Must have been originated by Gen AI. Oh, it was!

πŸ“– I is Involve. What internal communication can do, together with inform and influence.

πŸ“– J is for Journalists. Fellow communications professionals that PR practitioners can work with. If you call them hacks, they will call you flacks.

πŸ“– K is Kind of really important: outputs, out-takes and outcomes, with their cousin, objectives.

πŸ“– L is for Long-form. The evolution of the press release. The days when these were short-form constructs of who, what, where, why and when plus a quote are from the age of telex and fax.

πŸ“– M is Mental health. We need to get better at recognising and helping fellow practitioners (and ourselves) with mental health issues.

πŸ“– N is Networks. What social media was initially called before they smelled the money.

πŸ“– O is Owned. Our created assets. Part of the content planning model, PESO. Which is not an Italian sauce.

πŸ“– P is Publicity. The BBC’s old-fashioned way of describing PR.

πŸ“– Q is Quick. Speed is essential when responding to a crisis.

πŸ“– R is for Relationship building. Has overtaken reputation as the foundation of PR.

πŸ“– S is Social Responsibility. Part of an organisation’s licence to operate.

πŸ“– T is Topical or timely. Is your press release that?

πŸ“– U is for Universal. I am happy to see public relations associations in so many countries in all of the continents.

πŸ“– V is for Values. Often incorporated into a purpose statement together with vision. Part of an organisation’s reason for being.

πŸ“– W is for Wiki, a technique to aid collaboration.

πŸ“– X is X, much loved as Twitter. Now largely forgotten.

πŸ“– Y is Yawn. Nearly there.

πŸ“– Zzzzzz. Well done if you got this far!
